Robson Green is to tackle some of the world's wildest marine life in Extreme Fishing with Robson Green.
The show follows the Wire in the Blood star on a global adventure as he takes to the waters with some of the world's most daring fishermen and women. The series begins as Green goes back to basics in Costa Rica, living with the Maleku tribe as they hunt the elusive machaca fish, a relative of the piranha.
He also visits Louisiana in the USA, where he tries his hand at underwater spear fishing with locals and attempts to snare a barracuda. And a stint off the coast of South Africa sees Green reel in a hammerhead shark. In Europe, he fishes at the mouth of the Ebro River, hunting a giant catfish. At sea in the Azores, he puts all his new-found skills to the test in an attempt to catch a 600lb blue marlin.
The show was commissioned by Five controller of factual entertainment, Steve Gowans, and is executive produced by Hamish Barbour and series produced by Ross Harper. The series builds on the recent success that Five has enjoyed from pairing famous faces with travelogues, most notably with Paul Merton in China.
Produced by RDF-owned IWC Media for Channel Five (UK), each instalment of the 4x 60-minute series will trace a different stage of Robson's journey. It will air from 1st September 2008 in a 9pm slot on Monday nights. Producer/director is Jeremy Cadle, Director of Photography is Tim Pollard and the Underwater Director of Photography is Andy McLeod.

For the second leg of his adventure, Robson heads to the Tennessee river in the Deep South of the USA to try 'catfish grabbling'. This perilous sport involves catching giant catfish without using rods.

Robson travels to South Africa, where he finds himself in shark-infested waters while paddle skiing. He also tries his hand at reef fishing in a bid to land the biggest salmon of his career.

He really stepped up to the challenge and trained hard to fish from a Kayak in the Indian Ocean. He showed nerves of steel paddling over huge waves in shark infested waters. I'm not actually sure I told him about the sharks!
I thought he'd left the biggest tip I had ever been given but it turned out he'd just forgot his wallet!

Robson Green has turned wildlife presenter with a new fishing series.
The Wire In The Blood star, 43, has just returned from the Azores where he caught a 600lb marlin for Five's four-parter Extreme Fishing. On his catch of the day, the keen fly fisherman says: "I felt like Santiago from The Old Man And The sea by Ernest Hemingway. Catching the marlin was the ultimate."
Robson says that Sir David Attenborough won't have to worry about the Geordie taking his wildlife commentary crown. Making his first ever documentary, he explains: "It was an amazing experience but I'm not a presenter and for the first two days I was trying to be Sir David and even talking like him. So they binned the first two days of filming as it just wasn't working and I reverted to plain old Robson."
Robson visited Spain, East Africa, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi and Thailand for the series but not all went smoothly. He admits: "I was out of my comfort zone - I was followed by sharks, nipped painfully by a crab, I fished for barracuda under an oil rig, did free diving and went catfish grabbing. It was an amazing experience - and as a fisherman, a real thrill."
More used to fishing in the rivers of North-East England for salmon and trout, Robson worried that he might be out of his depth making the series. He admits: "Before filming the biggest fish I ever caught was a 15lb salmon - by the end I'd bagged a 600lb marlin and hooked a 120lb sailfish which almost tore my arms off! I also caught a 20lb tuna and minutes later was enjoying raw sushi!"
The opening programme on September 1 sees Robson in Costa Rica where he goes fishing for the machaca, a relative of the deadly piranha. He also dined on armadillo and boiled bananas but there were plenty of sleepless nights thanks to a noisy rooster and other animals making a din. He moans: "The rooster kicked off at 1.15am and the dawn chorus was monkeys and every bird imaginable!"
Extreme Fishing With Robson Green is a detour from acting and directing as Wire In The Blood returns for a new run on ITV1 in mid-September. He's also been to Lithuania to film Clash Of The Santas with Mark Benton, a City Lights spin-off set during a Father Christmas convention. He's also executive producer of ITV1 drama Place Of Execution.
